September is always the best time of the year for contemporary art. With the end of summer, families return from vacationing and get back into the swing of school and work. Participating in cultural programming returns to prominence and, with winter and the headaches of preparing for the holidays still a few months away, those interested in collecting art swarm gallery districts. Exploiting their patrons' fresh return, art dealers push forward their key exhibitions for the year. Coveted September exhibition slots are offered to the most valued gallery artists, in a signal to the market that these are the most exciting artists to watch, the thoroughbred race-horses competing for the triple crown of sales, critical review and buzz.

Though by no means an exhaustive list of the many amazing shows currently on display this month, The Ministry of Artistic Affairs shares the following selections from the many fantastic exhibitions we saw last week in New York City. All of the galleries are listed below with live links to their online version but if you have time to drop some NYC in the next few weeks, we highly recommend hitting each of these shows in person:

In "Home Within Home" at Lehmann Maupin Gallery's main space in Chelsea, Do Ho Suh will present a series of works that reflect the artist's ongoing exploration of themes surrounding cultural displacement and the co-existence of cultural identities, as well as the perception of our surroundings and how one constructs a memory of a space.

On November 27, join The Ministry for a tour of the permanent art collection at the Schulich School of Business led by art consultant Judy Schulich.

The Schulich School of Business has invested in a world-class collection of Contemporary art featuring works from internationally recognized artists such as Ryan McGinness, Edward Burtynsky, Ken Lum, and Do Ho Suh. The artworks enhance the public spaces in the building where students, faculty, and visitors walk by everyday, and Judy will explain the cultural value of these pieces and demystify their presence. She will discuss how each piece in the collection relates to the Schulich School of Business's international business ethics and analyze how corporate collections work, how they are funded, and how they are designed to reflect the missions and goals of the institutions that collect them.

This outing will provide an excellent opportunity to view some of the most important large scale Contemporary artworks in Toronto, some of which were commissioned specifically for the spaces in this building.
